May AB Challenge!!

Tone your tummy for Summer!! I have an Ab Challenge for you.  This will help tighten and tone your upper and lower abs.  But, remember if you have extra fat around the middle you might not actually see those abs unless you start working on your nutrition too!! Nutrition is Key! Let me know if you need help with that.  But, You are going to Love this Ab Challenge!! I'll be doing it right a long with you for the Month of May.

All you need to do is follow this exactly 3 x per week.  Don't try to do any more days than that.  You need at least a day of rest in between.  When you let your muscles recover that is actually when the muscle fibers are building. Rest is important!!  You can just use this in place of any other Ab workouts that you are doing.  Add it on to your regular strength training routine for the month. Strength training at least 3 x per week will do wonders for your body!!

Do 3 rounds of the Lower Ab Trifecta followed by 3 rounds of the Upper Ab trifecta.
(If you have lower back problems this might not be for you)

Here are links with video instructions and more info about each:

You can Start Now since "Monday starts" always sound happy in the mind :) and make sure you go all Month of May!!  Here's to Toned Tummy's for the Summer!!

Lake to Lake Relay, March 2013

March 2, 2013 me and a few of my favorite people did a 50 mile relay from Gunlock resevoire to Sand Hallow resevoire in St. George, Utah. My sister, mother in law, sister in law and best friend decided to do this just a couple months before.  After looking at the race map of each leg we then realized we were CRAZY!! I talked my sister and friend into doing it.  My friend had never done an event at all and although looks so fit and skinny as a string bean had just started exercising consistently last fall.  She adapted to running quite well and is a speedster!! For years she told me how she HATES exercise!! After doing this as her first big event I don't think she will ever stop! It's addicting once you start doing events! :) My sister who has been running now for a few months told me she will just stick with 5k's and never wants to do anything else.  She told me she likes to do races though because it keeps her working toward something.  So, when I called her up to see if she wanted to do this she about freaked that she would have to do about 5 or 6 miles TWICE in one day. :)

Ya, we might be crazy!! Go Muffin Tops! :)

So, training was going well.  I was getting up there in my miles, running 5 miles consistently 2 or 3 times per week.  On top of that I was doing a boxing program and weight training.  Working out for a couple hours 6 days a week.  I felt great! But, soon realized I had taken it too far when just 4 days before the race I hurt my hamstring.  I could hardly walk.  I did a split run that day just to see how I would feel doing 2 runs in a day (because each person on our team would have to do 2 legs each).  I wanted to see if I could do it and how I felt.  My hamstring didn't feel that great while running, it felt very tight and strained a little, but felt okay on the 2nd run of my split runs that day.  I then stretched good when I got home, but then sat for a few minutes.  When I went to get up I realized that I couldn't walk and something was wrong!!! :( so, so, sad....I wanted to cry....and did cry for the next couple days! I didn't know what to do.  I didn't want to quit on my team, after all I was the one who talked a few of them into doing it, plus I really was looking forward to this.

My husband gave me a priesthood blessing the next day and said I would be able to accomplish my goal and finish the race and I just need to learn to not be so hard on myself and be smarter with how I push myself with excercise. I was expecting to miraculously feel 100% better the next day and still...I was limping.  I was getting mad at him thinking "how can you tell me I can finish this and I can barely walk." It was for sure a test of faith for me.  I went to physical therapy 2 days before the race and got taped up and stretched and he said I could probably do this, but it won't be easy and I might have to come see him after it's over! :) He said it won't do any more damage than is already done. So, I had to just do it! Injuries are so devastating!

I didn't try to run again until right here a couple days later.......on My first leg.....

my hamstring was all wrapped up and ready to go...I guess! HA...my sister was excited to finish her 1st leg, the longest she had ever run...6 miles!!
I'm thinking...ouch, eeekkk!! I tried to take it a little easy, not worrying about time...just finishing!
Some good up hills were killer!!

Finishing up my first leg, it was 4.09 miles, difficulty 7 out of 10
Hamstring hurt the first 2 miles and then was warm and...uh Numb! After that I stretched and iced until my 2nd leg.
You got love a few crazies along the way! :)
Here I go...the last leg of the day!! Leg #10, 7.09 miles, difficulty 8 out of 10.

Again, my hamstring hurt for the first couple miles and then after that almost felt numb!! I was going at a steady pace.  It was soooo hot coming around the resevoir, the sun was blazing on my face and I was starting to feel dehydrated towards the end, getting cold sweats and dizzy.  I just kept thinking..."I have to finish, I'm almost there!!"

My team saw me coming and ran with me into the finish line!! So Awesome!! Tears were coming down! I was so glad I was done and that we did it!!!

We all did something that we never thought we could do.  We all did longer distances than we had ever done!! It was a great day!! 50 miles!!
We worked hard for these medals! :)

I ran a total of 11.18 miles that day. So, hamstring has been hurt ever since, I'm slowly getting back into exercise and I think I'm now ready to try running again!! I hope I can get back to where I was injury free!!

You can do more than you think you can, you just need to believe that you can!!

St. George 5K January 2013

I did a 5k with my sister in January! It was so cold, but a beautiful day for a run.  I was so happy to do it with her.  She has been doing awesome at running, she never though she could!

Here I come through the finish :)

My time was 29:57

Color Run November 2012

I can't believe I never wrote about the Color Run.  Color Me Rad 5k in St. George, UT was awesome! Its a great event to do if you are thinking about signing up for a race for your first time.  It was more relaxed and just a really fun event. This was my sisters (the one in the middle) first real event and she hasn't stopped since!

This was obviously before we got all colorful! :) It was Cold too! Brrr...

It was a lot of fun! There was no times or anything....just a whole lot of color!

Whole 30- Week 3 Recap and a BIG OOPS...Do over!!

Week 3 started to be a little tougher for me for some reason.  I was a little stressed that week (last week) and I just started feeling like I "needed" a treat!! That's how I work as most people probably do.  When I'm stressed, when I'm tired, when I'm sad or anything....I just want a TREAT!! Isn't that how we are trained as little kids.  Treats are a reward.  We get treats when we are sad or scared or when we do a good job at something, etc. It's a super hard thing to try NOT to reward your kids and yourself with treats!  It almost ruins us for life.  We can't think of food in the right way! Crazy! So, I started snacking on Lara Bars more, or my Coconut Manna more....mmmmm....both so good, pretty healthy and Whole30 approved in a way!  But, the point is, I wasn't eating them because I was hungry.  I was eating them because I was trying to feed my emotions!! Then, I kept on eating them, eating them..... obviously it wasn't working to feed my emotions. That is one thing I need to work on, learning to cope in a different way other than with food!  But, otherwise before realizing I was eating too much and I really wan't hungry....I was feeling great.  No more foggy head, headaches, anything.  Feeling pretty good, still getting tired in the afternoons.  But, lots of improvements otherwise.....until the big OOPS HAPPENED!! Read on....

But first, these are a few things I cooked this week :)

Orange Chicken and mashed cauliflower (I promise I'll start creating recipe posts with all these things soon)

You aren't really suppose to "Paleofy" foods into a treat during the whole30, but I was getting so sick of eggs so I tried something different for Breakfast.  It was soooo good! But, this actually set me off to want more treats, so it might be a no-no for me.
Paleo Pancakes with Coconut Manna spread on top with strawberries and blackberries.Mmmmm! So Good!! My mouth is watering right now!

This is just a quick salad.  I have pretty much been eating different salads for lunch all week.  This is spinach leaves with grilled chicken, avacado, mandarin oranges and almond slices.

So, I finished up Week 3 and started on Week 4 Monday.  Week 4 and on Day 22...almonst done with the 30 days!!! Guess what happened?! In the evening of Day 22 I totally slipped...on purpose, something snapped in me and I just started eating...I thought who cares, why not...it seriously felt like the Devil himself tempting me with food...haha.  That night (last night) I ended up eating tacos from the newly opened taco bell in our town, icecream from DQ, pretzels, granola...random things! And you know what....none of them even tasted super great to be quitting for!!! Nothing ever tastes as good as Healthy feels!!! It's never worth it!

But, I am human...food controls me. But, I will show that I can be in control from now on!! I started fresh and new with a new Whole30 starting today!! So, back to square one, I'm on Day 1!! Can you believe it, I was sooo close.  For some reason I always sabotage myself.  I know I can do this.  Why do I sabotage myself!! I want to do this for my health and because I felt AWESOME!!! And because to be the fittest I can and reach my goals I need to do this! I believe in this way of eating...I believe in it for fat loss and helping with ailments and diseases and it has already helped me in a lot of ways, including that I started having no hypoglycemia symptoms whatsoever and was able to go more than 2 hours without eating and being controlled by food!!!  I was trying to think about when to start up again and thinking about my upcoming anniversary and different things....but I realized this makes me happy and I want to be healthy...I don't need to wait, there is no reason to wait.  So, I slipped...but I decided to not make any excuses. I got right back up!! You can too!! We all fall.  Just get back up, don't look back, only forward!! You can do whatever you have your sights on!

I have an amazing group of women all doing the same thing and I could not do this without them and their support...we are all supporting each other!!

Whole30- Week 2 Recap

Well, I'm just finishing up Week 2!! It's been Awesome so far.  I love all the food I've been eating and I love the changes I'm seeing in my body.  I'm starting to feel really good.  I don't have any Hypoglycemia symptoms anymore and I've been able to go a while between meals.  I never ever would be able to do that before this. I love that I feel so great after a meal.  Everything I am eating is so good for me. I don't have any cravings anymore.  I haven't since day 1. So, it's going great. Most of my meals have been pretty simple, I've tried not to make it too complicated and my family pretty much eats what I eat for dinner, sometimes they have different sides than I do, but so far so good with the family. Here are a few of the things I have eaten this week. :)
Yummy Fruit bowl.  I usually do a mix of Strawberry, blackberries, kiwi, bananas and coconut flakes or nuts on top.

Egg Muffins.  I made them with spinach, sausage and egg.  My whole family scarfed these down.  I had to make a couple dozen.

Soup- chicken, celery, carrot, onion, chicken broth and seasonings like garlic powder, onion salt, salt/pepper.  I just kept throwing seasonings in until it tasted good :)

Coconut Chicken w/ Artichoke hearts and brocolli, two of my favorite veggies :)

Spinach/Strawberry Salad with a side of leftover Pork Roast.  Yum!

Breakfast- 2 Fried eggs, Sweet potato and fruit

Salmon Patties with a side of brocolli and avacado
This is starting to feel like a really normal way of eating for me.  It's just something that is really working for me.  So, I'm loving it.  I even ate out A LOT this week and I still was able to stick to the plan.  So, it's great to know that it can be done.  I'm thinking more of the foods I am eating as only good fuel to put in my body.  I am enjoying it too though.  I can tell a difference in my mood.  I'm just happy and upbeat.  I feel like my clothes are fitting great. And I just feel an overall good mood boost.  I still get super tired in the late afternoons/evenings.  But, other than that everything has improved.

Week 2 has been a success! Yay!

Whole 30- Week 1

Monday I started the Whole30 from www.whole9life.com  My first week went pretty well.  I don't feel deprived.  I'm loving all the food I've been eating.  One thing you have to be when trying to eat healthy is open minded and not afraid to try new things.  I've been very open minded the last few months and have learned to love Avacados, peppers, spinach....and more.  This week I also learned to love sweet potatoes which I have never liked.  I love that I feel in control and that I am only giving my body good stuff and nothing else.  It feels great!  And on top of that I lost 7 lbs this week!!  I'm not really in it to only lose weight, but it definitely is one of the reasons because I want to lower my body fat % and make sure I don't lose muscle. So that feels good to know that it's working. When you are eating this way it also ensures that you are losing FAT and not muscle. You aren't suppose to weigh yourself besides the 1st day and the last, so I gotta put the scale away until Day 30 now. :) Still can't wait to get past this first week and into the next couple.  Most people that have tried the whole30 say that the 3rd week or so is when they started seeing improvements in their health.  I mean big improvements. Not just their skin, allergies, their energy, they gym performance, but bigger health imrpovements as well.  Those that have Diabetes, Arthritis, PCOS or Celiac Disease among many other things, they have seen a big improvement! That is amazing!  If you have never really thought about it before now....everything really does come down to the food you eat!! You can change your life just by the way you eat!! Believe it, it's true! This can help children as well, their allergies, ADHD, etc. Isn't it amazing that we can heal ourself with food.  You can see a bunch of testimonials HERE and various diseases that you can improve by following the Whole30 guidelines.  I know it's only my first week, but so far I would recommend this to anybody and everybody. I started reading the book "It's starts with food." It explains A LOT of why the whole30 guidelines are the way they are and explains everything that you should do.  It's amazing!

These aren't the pretties meals :) but just a couple things I ate this week.

I haven't craved anything.  Sweets taste sweeter, veggies taste awesome.  It's good wholesome food that we were meant to eat.  My family has had sweets all around me this week, we even went out to eat and I still stuck to it.  Yay! On to week 2....

If you want to see a more detailed log of exactly what I ate everyday and how I was feeling you can check out My Whole30 log.
